These gleaming stainless steel funnels aren’t just eye-catching, they’re designed to spark curiosity and play. Inspired by the ventilation funnels and speaking tubes once used on ships, the sculptures mimic the atmosphere of an old ship deck.

Positioned in three clusters along the wharf, the sculptures encourage visitors to climb inside, listen, and even chat through connected tubes. Some funnels reach beneath the wharf and into the sea, letting you experience the harbour’s sounds in a whole new way.
While the sculptures are a playful addition to the waterfront, they also honour Auckland’s maritime heritage and its role as a bustling port.
Created by Company, a Finnish-Korean design duo, Sounds of Sea was born from the pair’s fascination with Auckland’s tides and the vibrant blue-green waters of the Waitematā Harbour.
Whether you're whispering through the funnels, listening to the sea’s rhythms, or simply taking in the view, the sculptures offer a unique way to engage with the city’s maritime past.
