Here one day, gone the next

In the wee hours of the morning on Friday 15 December, a team of skilled contractors descended on Karanga Plaza and performed a feat of engineering greatness. They moved the existing Karanga Kiosk from one side of the plaza to the other…in one piece.

As part of the ongoing regeneration of Wynyard Quarter, it was time for a new purpose-built, state-of-the-art Kiosk to service Wynyard Quarter’s visitors into the future. The Kiosk will continue to reflect the Quarter’s key sustainability vision and will be powered by clean energy from solar panels and a Tesla battery.

For those of you familiar with the Karanga Kiosk, you’ll remember it being made of three shipping containers joined together with a green (living) roof. The need to move it to a temporary new home presented a number of challenges but nothing that couldn’t be overcome with a 50 tonne crane and a big truck.

The operation went smoothly and the temporary Kiosk is now in situ for the height of the summer, nestled next to the Emirates Team New Zealand America's Cup base by the Wynyard Crossing bridge hut.

The construction of the new Kiosk is being undertaken by Stanley Group in partnership with  Strachan Group Architects and is expected to be completed by mid-February 2018.
